Extending Digital Intelligence into the Depths of a Gold Mine
Digital transformation in mining has largely focused on what is visible — fleets, dashboards, and surface automation.
Yet in ultra-deep mining operations, the greatest inefficiencies lie in what is invisible: the infrastructure that delivers water, compressed air, and cooling kilometres from the shaft barrel.
For years, BBEnergy has mastered the digitisation of surface and shaft-level energy systems. Pumping networks, compressed air systems, refrigeration plants, and integrated SCADA environments have been engineered for visibility, control, and measurable energy performance.
But surface mastery is no longer the differentiator.
The next evolution required embedding intelligence at the production face.

Now Digital Intelligence Operates at the Production Face
At mature and ultra-deep mining operations, critical services operate across extreme depths and horizontally distributed crosscuts. Traditionally, these zones relied on centralised monitoring and manual valve intervention, with services supplied continuously to ensure reliability.
BBEnergy engineered a full-scale digital extension into active production areas across two ultra-deep mines, deploying more than 20 kilometres of fibre optic infrastructure horizontally underground. The end result was a structural redesign of underground service control, fundamentally shifting the operating model:
• Real-time visibility of pressure, flow, and system status at the point of use
• Remote actuation of isolation and control valves
• Immediate response to burst pipes, pressure drops, or abnormal consumption
• Data-driven decision-making at the production face
The deployment included underground fibre architecture, smart remotely actuated stope shut-off valves, custom control logic, full SCADA integration, and an analytics layer to drive optimisation.

From Continuous Supply to Intelligent Demand Control
Water reticulation, compressed air generation, and refrigeration represent some of the largest controllable electricity loads in deep-level gold mining.
Traditional models assume continuous supply to avoid disruption. BBEnergy re-engineered this philosophy through zone-based smart control, enabling:
• Production-aligned scheduling of services
• Real-time abnormal flow detection
• Remote isolation without underground travel
• Pressure optimisation to reduce leakage
Some real life result are shown below, which delivered:

Building a Future-Ready Underground Platform
The fibre backbone embedded within crosscuts now supports more than valve control. It establishes a scalable digital infrastructure capable of enabling real-time environmental monitoring, predictive analytics, condition-based maintenance, and future automation integration. In strategic terms, underground infrastructure has shifted from static to adaptive, where BBEnergy’s surface and station capabilities laid the foundation.
In ultra-deep gold mining, that evolution is not incremental improvement — it is a structural shift in how BBEnergy and the Mine operate, design, control and optimise energy-intensive infrastructure.
